Albemarle Unveils Plans for Lithium Mine to Boost U.S. Supply Chain
Albemarle Corporation has released its detailed plan for the Kings Mountain Mine, a significant lithium project in the U.S., aiming to produce about 420,000 tons of lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate annually. This initiative is a crucial step towards bolstering the domestic supply chain for sustainable transportation and critical defense applications. Eric Norris, President of Albemarle Energy Storage, expressed excitement about leveraging this significant resource and involving the community in sustainable mining operations.
The project plans to minimize environmental impact by reutilizing existing mining sites and repurposing waste material for construction aggregate, further aiming to explore secondary markets for ore tailings in ceramics or construction materials. Adhering to strict environmental and community standards, the mining operation is set to implement the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance's (IRMA) guidelines and will undergo rigorous third-party verification post-launch.
Significant financial support has come from a $90 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense and a $150 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, underlining the strategic importance of this project in national infrastructure development. Albemarle has also initiated an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to evaluate the potential effects on the local environment and community and is actively engaging stakeholders to shape the assessment’s framework. The results of this assessment will help the company develop robust strategies for minimizing negative impacts while maximizing positive outcomes as they move towards operational commencement.
