Lloyd’s Register Approves SDARI's Innovative Ammonia-Powered Containership Design

Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle to SDARI, a leading Chinese design firm, for its groundbreaking ammonia-fueled 8,200 TEU containership concept. This achievement is the result of a collaboration between Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN E&S) within a joint development project. The design features a 73,000 cubic meter Type C ammonia containment system with a unique dome configuration within the tank connection space. It also incorporates the MAN 6G80-C10.5-LGIA Ammonia-Fueled Engine, equipped with a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HP-SCR) system to meet Tier II/Tier III emissions standards.

Andy McKeran, LR's Chief Commercial Officer, stated, "With growing interest in ammonia as a future fuel to reduce maritime greenhouse gas emissions, this collaboration highlights the technical expertise of LR, SDARI, MSC, and MAN E&S in containership and ammonia fuel designs."

Mr. Li Xin, Vice Director of SDARI, added, "SDARI is dedicated to developing low-carbon solutions with our partners. This project offers a practical solution to significantly reduce carbon emissions, promoting sustainable shipping practices."

The approval from Lloyd’s Register marks a significant milestone in sustainable shipping. The collaboration between SDARI, MSC, and MAN E&S demonstrates the importance of partnerships in addressing the maritime industry's decarbonization challenges. Utilizing advanced technologies and expertise, the partners aim to make ammonia a viable alternative fuel, contributing to a more sustainable future for global shipping.
